Protecting Heritage and Culture Through Peacemaking: Training for Law Enforcement and Public Safety Responders

Protecting Heritage and Culture Through Peacekeeping, an in-person training, is a customizable training curriculum package that provides a template and supplemental resources for tribal communities to leverage to assist in providing an overview and insight on different cultural and historical tribal aspects at the national level as well as within their regional and local level.

Description

This course seeks to strengthen the relationships between local law enforcement and the tribal jurisdictions they protect. Through discussion, lecture, and group activities law enforcement will explore tribal history and recognize the unique culture of specific tribes in their area. Participants will explore interactions between tribal members and law enforcement and discuss strategies for improved relations. Participants will identify community stakeholders and opportunities for collaborative partnerships between law enforcement and tribal communities. Case studies and scenarios will be reviewed to identify successful strategies to help effectively engage and collaborate with tribal communities.

Target Audience

Tribal law enforcement; non-tribal law enforcement serving tribal areas; law enforcement who may respond to tribal jurisdictions or work closely with tribal police.
